The following are a few walks we have taken through the fields and lanes surrounding the Village of Plymtree. Should you decide to do one, or all, we hope you enjoy rambling through Plymtree Country. You will no doubt build up an appetite during your walk so don’t forget to book a table at The Blacksmiths Arms before you start out. If you like you can pre order your lunch/dinner before you leave.
Walk One – Here is a flat and easy circular walk from Plymtree across the fields to Clyst Hydon and back to the Pub. It is approx 6km. However first things first – remember to book your table for either lunch or dinner at The Blacksmiths Arms - you should be back in about one hour. OK boots on, lets start – from the front door of The Blacksmiths Arms turn right then immediately left into Greenend Lane (opposit the Church), after a few yards take a tarmac footpath on the left walking between a few houses and then stables. Continue straight on this path to the gate ahead which leads into a field where you continue straight along the edge of the field. Stay on the same line across the next field and then bear half right along the rutted track in the one beyond. When you reach Peradon Farm bear left and then turn sharp right through large black gates and into the farmyard. Bear left, through the farm gate and onto the concrete drive and then immediately right, across the field to a small gate in the furthest right hand corner. In the next field, keep the area of woodland on your right. YOu will now reach a larger field. Bear half left, aiming for a gap in the fence in front of the left hand end of the thatched farmhouse. Over a concrete bridge and across the corner of the next field brings you to a roadway in front of Marsh Farm. Turn left and then go through the first field gate on your right. This is the second side of the triangular route. The hedge stays on your right, through two large fields. Next you pass along the edge of Bessie’s Copse, managed by the Woodland Trust. At the road turn right. A little beyond the high wall of the Manor House, turn right up the track signposted as a footpath. Go over a stile beside a gate – and its straight ahead for Plymtree. In this first small field keep the hedge on your left and in the second keep the post and wire fence on your right. Pass through another gate and under a pylon line into a large field. Here you need to head towards another pylon ahead and slightly to your right. Just beyond is a little wooden troll bridge over the infant River Clyst. Keep the hedge on your right, cross a ditch, then look for a stile in the hedgeline – and then another. Follow the direction shown by the waymark across the next field, slightly uphill and diagonally left. Go over the next stile and across the corner of the field, passing under the boughs of an oak tree. As you enter the final field you will see Plymtree church up ahead. Walk towards it, to emerge through a kissing gate back on to Greenend Lane and then up to the Village. At the top of Greenend Lane turn right and directly in front is The Blacksmiths Arms Pub – so come on in for your lunch or dinner and that well earned drink.
Walk No 2 This is a combined footpath, field and country lane walk which should take you about 1 ½ hours. In wet weather parts of this walk will be muddy. Firstly, don’t forget to book a table at the Pub, if you like you can pre order your lunch/dinner before you leave.
From the front door of The Blacksmiths Arms turn right and walk past the Church which is on your right. Continue along this road. As you pass the entrance to the Plymtree Community Shop there is a thatched cottage on your left. Turn left onto the path which is signposted public footpath directly behind this cottage. Continue over the stile and keep to the left of the field following round to the next stile. Cross at 45 degrees to the next stile and then straight ahead through a gate. Keep straight with the hedge on your right you then pass through Sanguishayes Farm (this is a working farm and family home therefore please be considerate). Continue up the driveway to the road where you cross over the brook and continue through the gate following the stream to the end of the field. Over the stile keeping the stream on your right and head towards the large white house (Coombe House). After the next stile you will pass a large oak tree and you continue onto the gate which opens onto Motts Lane. Here turn left onto Motts Lane where you will pass Higher Weaver Cottage on your right and Coombe House on your left. After approx 200 yards bear left, continue for another 400 yards to Higher Weaver Cross. Go straight across direction Weaver. Continue on lane past the driveways to Middle Weaver House and then Lower Weaver House. This lane takes you over a stream past the driveway of Siddy Langley Glass. At Weaver Cross, turn left and continue up the road to Plymtree. At the crossroads in the village you turn right which leads back to The Blacksmiths Arms and a well deserved pint of Ale and wholesome meal.
Good debate…
I can see a lot of different points of view on both sides of this subject…
